Oncidium barbatum

A small plant with a long spike from the lowlands of southern Brazil, intermediate-warm growing and temperature tolerant. The fringes of the lip gave the name -bearded Oncidium- and can be longer.
But I hesitate to follow some taxonomists and call it Gomesa now.

How long is that spike?

What a great looking bloom on a healthy plant! I always appreciate when folks here on OB post pictures of the plant as well as the flower. I am new to orchids and it gives me a good education to see the whole plant...what a healthy specimen is supposed to look like!

I also think that the plant aspect is as important as flower details in the classification, and it is helpful to decide if a plant is suitable for a growing space. Thanks for your nice comments. And for terracotta, the plant size is 25-30 cm, the flower spike 95 cm and could eventually be even longer for a strong plant.

Thanks so much! Those long spikes are dramatic, but it is nice to know that is what they are going to do if you have a small space. I have a Wilsonaria that I bought last year with 2 spikes that were about 36cm. Imagine my surprise when I again have two spikes...but they are about 75cm this time. Whoa! I cannot wait to see it bloom again. If it half as nice as your barbatum I will be thrilled!
