Default Large Onc. Sharry Baby with massive spike!

Oncidium Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance'

I got this one about 4 years ago at Trader Joe's - it was in a 4" pot at the time - it's now trying to bust out of the 10" pot it's in.

Only one spike this time, but what a spike! The spike is nearly 4' long (I last measured before it was done growing, it was over 3 1/2' at that time), and there are around 200 blooms!

Thanks for looking

it sure does smell like chocolate all over the place! The fragrance can be very strong at times - fortunately it grows outside

Can I just ask, is the fragrance supposed to be a perfume chocolate, or is it more of a hershey sort of aroma? I have one that I think is probably Sharry Baby, no tag, so noid, but the flowers and leaves and etc look identical to yours. It smells like chocolate perfume to me, not really like a hershey bar.

Just wondering if that's what people mean when they say that it smells like chocolate. I have it in my husband's office, I figured he brought it home, so he can sacrifice the space for it, and I walk in and open the door, just for the smell. It's awesome.

I hope mine gives me as many flowers as yours one day! That's just gorgeous!

Ok, you've convinced me. Despite having a reputation for being an oncidium killer, I just have to try one of those.

Very nice, Sonya. Good growing! Mine is in double spike and should bloom in a few weeks. I doubt I'll get 200 flowers though. Few orchids in my collection draw in the interest of others than the famed chocolate one. It's worth every inch of space it takes up.

If you don't mind someone else answering your question, for me the fragrance is like melting a bar of good chocolate in the sun then adding a drop or two of vanilla. Hold it a few inches from your nose and that's exactly what is smells like. Divine!, and for many weeks on end, the flowers last 7-8 weeks in my conditions.
