Just wondering if that's what people mean when they say that it smells like chocolate. I have it in my husband's office, I figured he brought it home, so he can sacrifice the space for it, and I walk in and open the door, just for the smell. It's awesome.

I hope mine gives me as many flowers as yours one day! That's just gorgeous!
I guess the fragrance could be described as 'chocolate perfumey' - it doesn't smell like pure cocoa - but I have read here that some cultivars may smell more chocolatey than others ... I think, too, the fragrance seems more chocolate like when you are a bit away from the plant, just catching a more subtle scent.

Thanks for the compliment

If you don't mind someone else answering your question, for me the fragrance is like melting a bar of good chocolate in the sun then adding a drop or two of vanilla. Hold it a few inches from your nose and that's exactly what is smells like. Divine!, and for many weeks on end, the flowers last 7-8 weeks in my conditions.
thanks I've gotten comments from some neighbors, even without smelling it, if it's the "chocolate orchid"

Pretty good description of the fragrance, too

That is a one big spike! It looks as it there were two spikes.
My Sharry Baby (had to give away) had such a long spike, over 6 feet in length (had to make a heart shape out of it to keep the whole thing as low as possible) but about 100 flowers.

I too like the description of fragrance given by one member. I always thought I don't really get the chocolate part, but definitely vanilla scent.
some plants may smell different than others I guess.

I "downgraded" my Sharry Baby with Heaven Scent, which is still big plant for me, although nothing like Sharry. It grows crazy good like Sharry and it is now sending up thee spikes, which stray much shorter than Sharry.

My TJ always carry the much shorter variety with smaller red flowers. They smell great too but unfortunately they have the worst leaves ever! I get nowhere near them. lol

I remember your SB with the insanely long spike!

This cultivar, at least, is huge! Huge pbulbs! It does look as though there would have to be more than one spike - there's a lot of branches on it, and even many of the branches have little "sub-branches"!
