New brassias, with a couple questions
Default New brassias, with a couple questions

Hello all, my son and I recently purchased a variety of brassias, and we are curious as to how much light, what kind of fertilizer, and how much water they need. Thanks!Attachment 84143

Nice!

Moderate light. Intermediate to warm temps. I haven't grown qny straight Brassia (just intergenerics) - I think these like media to approach dry in-between waterings.

Thanks for the reply. They are on my deck (on the north side under a translucent roof) no direct, but during the summer a goodly amount of indirect. The greenhouse they came from (3) watered every morning from above. So, here the soak and let dry method is probably best? Thanks again for the help and the link. (Bring them in before night temps drop into the 50's?)

When they are in growth(ex. leads, developing spike or buds), they like to be evenly moist. But when in flower or not in growth, they like to have a wet and dry waterings. I have one of the brassia. And have high light in the upper levels of the oncidium group but less than cattleya light. And yes, keep it above 50 as they are warm-growing. And regular better-gro water soluable fertilizers would be fine. And when it flowers again do not stake it if you want a natural look. What medium is the brassia in? And what area you live in?

And they like humidity also.

They are growing in volcanic rock with some styrofoam chunks. I live in the piedmont area of NC, highs 80's to 90's and lows usually around 70 give or take a little. Thanks.

Okay if they are in lava rock then water it every day and during no growth water it every two days as they love to be continually moist. Also you should fertilize the plant once every week during warm season(summer and spring) and twice a week during cold season(winter and fall). you can try to order a media called orchiata and the plant loves it and will flourish it in and it will be easier for you if you get it from a supplier in NC but I think if you are willing to go to pick it up and will be cheaper. It can be expensive but is worth it. I have mine in a clay pot with orchiata Classic #9 6-9 mm size with lava rock in the bottom.

The roots are good, don't look like they are root bound or anything. So, probably look at repotting this fall. Thanks for your input, all info is appreciated.

Repot it in the early to mid-spring so the oncoming new growth won't get damaged. And you are welcome.
