Onc spikes

Does the amount of light affect the length of Onc. spikes? When I got mine in spike they were all very compact with many branches, making a nice triangular display. Now with my conditions (under lights) they are VERY long with very little short branches if any. Just wondering what makes the difference....Jean

I would think it would have some bearing. They likely got higher light levels in the greenhouse where they came from. I know lots of my plants get lankier with less light so my thought is the same would apply to orchid spikes.

The plants themselves are nice full and compact not leggy in the least. That is why I was surprised at the length of the spikes..3 to 4 feet. They grew to the lights then past the lights! I put them next to a bright window and they continued to grow. Yikes !!

Some nurseries use growth regulating hormone on their bedding plants to keep them very compact. I don't know if it's ever used to control spikes on orchids tho.
