Tolumnia Red Berry

I bought this one just under a year ago at the New York Orchid show. It had 12 flowers on two spikes. This reblooming is smaller than that (only 5 flowers on a single 8" spike).

The spike took 2.5 months to mature. Flowers are 1" across, wine-red, and unscented.

I grow the tolumnia mounted on a piece of grapewood, with moss padding around the roots. Water daily.

How long have you used a tuft of moss for this plant? I'm curious because I have a similar set up and people always tell me the moss will stay too wet for the roots. I can tell you it doesn't but was wondering what your experience has been.

Since the beginning, Pilot (so just under a year). I grow all 3 of my tolumnias this way and have had no trouble with the roots at all.

I can safely report the same. I'm also the one (well there could be others!) who is growing a tolumnia in sh. My success has been mixed...the plant has sprouted many new fans but I wasn't careful when watering from the top and a few got crown rot. Now I'm more careful and increased the light and the plant is growing larger and more robustly.

Most of my tolumnia are in those small clay pots but I weave long strand moss around their old and existing roots and the new roots grow right for the moss. I live above 6500' and struggle to keep these plants hydrating using traditional, no moss methods.

Btw I love your name! Huge fan of the character from game of thrones with the same name. Is that why you chose it? Or did you have it before the books?!

I love this one. It's definitely going on my must have list.

I have a Pink Panther in bloom also on a price of grape wood; and it looks like the spike is going to branch. It also took forever to bloom.

I have another Pink Panther and a Genting Leopard in pots that I plant to transfer to mounts in the spring. I may even add the second Pink Panther to my existing mount.
I too use a moss "pad" under the mounted one, and it dries out quickly so no problems.

The little clay pots look great, but I've always struggled to imagine how the roots could be happy when confined to such a small space.

The name is entirely in reference to the Song of Ice and Fire saga. I was surprised it was available, frankly.

I love my Pink Panther as well (posted about those blooms a month ago) It has a bluish undertone to the flowers that I think is really cool.

Did yours produce any side spikes after the first round of blooms?
