I just wanted to say that I grow my Tolumnia in a clay pot with charcoal only. I give it a good dunk about once a week. Every other day I give it a quick spray down into the pot, except the day after I've watered it. It's been doing very well that way.
Hello again. My tolumnia seemed to be doing ok since my last post. However yesterday I noticed that it is starting to lose another leaf and the leaves are very pale. They are not the usual dark green.
I have continued treating it with KLN and have been watering about every other day if it is mostly dry. I attached a picture. Does anyone know what might be wrong with it now?
I agree with Silken.
But the tap water depends on where you live. Ours comes from the mountains and has very little chlorine. Even the masd. grows fine in it. Where we used to live it was very mineral and loaded with chlorine. Then I used r/o or rain water.
Tolumnia really like to dry out completely between watering. Make sure that is is totally dry and then wait another day to water it. I've killed several before I figured out that dry means really dry!
I think the culprit here is the glazed pot you are using....this kind of pot tend to kill roots(I dont know but my experience with glazed pots is not very good it almost killed two of my Cattleyas)....someone suggested to repot it in netpot....I think that will work....for your grow zone, follow the watering regimen Carrie suggests and your tap water doesnt affect it at all if your other orchids are thriving....
bright shaded light and warmth....
Like Silken mentioned, tolumnias are twig epiphytes. Because they grow on small twigs they dry very, very quickly. Many growers use tiny clay pots with no medium or very little. I've had luck with small pots fashioned from tree fern fiber with no media. I don't think you want them in plastic pots because it will hold moisture too long. I would use a tiny clay pot, net pot or tree fern fiber pot with a little charcoal or tree fern fiber. Good luck.
