Is this Oncidium varicosum? Male
Default Is this Oncidium varicosum?

The plant was imported from Brazil and labeled as Oncidium varicosum. It is in flower now but the blooms look quite different from these images on the internet. Is this a variety of varicosum or just mislabeled?

Pheli,

Yes, it's a Oncidium varicosum, probably var. rogersii. Onc. varicosum is quite variable, but yours is more or less typical (you can see one like yours in my gallery). A good source is "Orchidaceae Brasiliensis"; follow this link http://www.dalholl.hpg.ig.com.br/gen...varicosum.html

Pheli, I agree with Frederico your plant seems to be Onc. varicosum. Like he says, this species has somewhat variable flowers, but the pseudo bulb is a good way of clearing any possible doubt that has left. Take a look at one; varicosum has it ribbed and the surface is rough to the touch. The roughness is due to minuscule warts (varicosum = warty) that cover the pseudo bulb. Another frequently seen characteristic are small black stains scattered on the surface of the bulbs. Hope this helps you.

Thanks a lot, Frederico and Mauro.
The surface of their pseudobulbs are indeed rough and black-dotted . I will take another picture of their pseudobulbs some other day.
