Your plants are happy and healthy...
I looked at the weather report in Windhoek, Namibia ....you have mid 70F in the day and mid 45F at night....but with 11% humidity in your atmosphere.
That is like spring weather in my part of the world.
You can bring your plants outside under a shady tree and water it every morning....you are heading to warmer months now....just put them indoors 2 weeks before the frost comes

Morning.

No, I can't put them out yet, Bud. I need to wait until September at least. We normally get frost nights in July and August, and they can take you by surprise sometimes. I'll keep my plants inside for some more time, but as soon as it's warm enough they're all going outside.

Very nice flower. Love the color and the form. From my experience, the biggest most common problem growing these is that the roots stay too wet underneath theplants. The center of the rootmass stays wet while the surface and outsides get dry. While young it is not too much a problem but as the media ages it stays too wet. Onc and it's cousins don't like "wet" conditions. They love moist conditions though and don't like to dry ou. One way to keep them just right is to give them lots of air flow with a fan. And shallow pots or lots of pot shards or rocks piled up under the center of the rootmass.

What are your griowing conditions in Namibia? Most oncidiums can take warm to hot temps as long as they get lots of air movement with night temps dwn into the 50's for flower initiation.

Hey James.

I do struggle with my oncs in general, but I think I'm getting the hang of it now, and have been able to keep bulbs plump and roots alive for most of my onc NOIDS for some time now. And they producing nice, new roots after re-potting.

I've lately opted for rather dry than too wet. I've been considering trying S/H and have a couple of plants that I don't worry too much about in cut off coke bottles with drainage/ventilation holes as test bunnies. Looks very promising at this early stage.

I think I'm fine temperature-wise. I left all my orchids outside until the night temperature fell to 10-12 degrees Celsius this autumn and many of the phals responded with spiking. The oncs...not so much, but maybe they will if I put them out a bit early while we still have relatively cold nights. the day temp during the summer can reach around 35 celsius in my area.

I feel that watering is paramount. If they stay too wet the roots really suffer. I keep mine on the dry sde just watering enough to keep tem slightly damp. They respond well. I have a brassia rex "sakata" spiking right now along with a onc sharry baby and a sphaecelatum also spiking. My beallara is also in bloom right now. My temp swing here in SoCal is around 10F and the sun hides behind clouds all morning. Temp here during day around 70-75. So I feel watering is the most important thing you can do to have good oncidium alliance orchids.
