When I was researching tolumnia on the internet, some of the information I saw stated that they can bloom 2 or more times a year. Maybe they we referring to them re blooming on the same spike.

Camille- That sounds very exciting!!!
I had north and east winodw in my old apartment and now, just south. I was very concerned about my low light lovers like phals and paphs, but I managed to have them behind the tall dendrobiums and oncidiums that are right up against the window glass, so everyone is doing well so far. well, except dendrobiums flower color getting very dark.

fishmommy- As far as I understand, hybrids flower whenever new fans mature, so if grown under ideal conditions, they will bloom multiple times a year and this is not counting the flowers from the side spike off the main spike. so bascially well grown large plants may be in bloom much of the year.
Mines are mostly Tolumnia Genting series, they basically all look the same when in bloom, just different colors and maybe slightly different lip size.

The only tolumnias I cared for properly over this past winter was Tolumnia Pink N Pretty (also my favorite) It was last in bloom in September through October. It has been in bloom on a new spike (not the little side spike) since last month, is growing a new fan at the same time.

All my others suffered during the winter because I didn't give them enough light and water. I basically just "stored" them over the winter.

They need lots of water while growing like any living things do. I either mist them heavily multiple times everyday or soak them in light fertilizer solution for half an hour every other day.

These are from tropical ocean sides, where they are exposed to warm humid breeze and high light. Everyday, they will get showered on by heavy tropical storm in the late afternoon, then evening and night is dry and clear.
They have thick leaves and do tolerate drought ( as I was able to store them over the winter, I did mist often).
It is not required and only harm them especially if they are actively growing.
So people, please give your little tolumnias a lot of water!

I just received the one I bought on ebay in the mail yesterday. It's a beauty! It has about 15 fans. It labeled hybrid, so I don't know what it is but was a real bargain at about $13 including shipping. So I had to buy another! This one is Pokoki red.
I'm glad that you told us that they need lots of water while growing. Everything I read said to give them a drought at times.

15 fans??? Wow~ The most common ones are sold with 3-5 fans usually. That is a great deal!

I have two or three Popoki Mitzi, but I have no idea what popoki red is. could be the same clone with a different variation. mine have red blooms and look very nice!

I am sharing this photo that I found on the internet. It's tolumnia popoki mitzi and gives you an idea of its amazing flowering potential.

Wow! Now I'm really looking forward to this! I hope it it as nice as the hybrid I just received. The photo that was with my Popoki red shows it as almost pure red with just a slightly different shade at the edge. I bought it from vanda diffusion. This is the 6th plant I got from them. All have been good. Unfortunately, as soon as it was warm enough to ship, they no longer had vasco , Mokara or dendrobium. I got an orange vasco las year for $7!

Not to be a party pooper or anything, but I think yours was mislabled and it is probably popoki mitzi. I just never heard of popoki red, while popoki mitzi is a very well known and awarded tolumnia. I have other red, like Red Berry and stuff, deeper red than popoki but smaller flower. I prefer popoki mitzi. very nice plant with good growing habit.

The really bright red color you saw on the seller's image is due to the lighting effect. While there is some color variation among individual plants, popoki mitzi is usually not super vivid red in real life. Then, again, some are prettier than others.

I have some popoki mitzi. one is very pretty red tone (nothing like the photoshopped image though!) and other one bloomed with rather pale, washed out red/grey, which I thought was odd. I haven't dumped it out though. It is slowly recovering from my poor care over the winter. I'm just curious to see if it will flower with a better color this year.

Please post pictures when your new tolumnia blooms. I'm curious to see what the flowers will look like.

Yeah, like anything else, give them plenty of water while actively growing, then reduce watering when not growing. The exception to this is when the plant is in bloom and not growing any new fans. Drying will cause the premature bud/flower drop.
Also, give them high enough light that the leaves get dark purple spots and dark purple edge.

Tolumnias are usually sold potted in tiny clay pots, which tend to dry out very fast. So you want to keep that in mind when the weather gets hot.

I am posting one picture of my 'better' tolumnia popoki mitzi from december-january along with another picture many sellers use (this one being "enhanced" for maximum effect). My picture was taken in shade on a cloudy winter day, so imagine how nice the color could turn out otherwise. and notice the color pattern on sepals and petals.

Well, you are quite right! That is the picture that was used. I hate it when they photo shop them. Have you seen the blue rose seeds for sale on ebay? There is no such thing. It pisses me off! Then there are sellers who seem to be colour blind.
Anyway, I'm sure it will be gorgeous regardless. Thank you for the advise on growing them.

You're welcome! We all want to grow beautiful plants successfully.

I agree. Sellers have to post pictures of flowers under natural light. If they opt for 'touched' pitcure, it would be nice if they also post 'untouched' pictures so that consumers have good idea of what they are getting and hence, no surprise!

Regarding blue roses, you are right, blue (real blue) roses are white roses that have been dyed. The closest thing to blue rose is light lavendar with slight blue cast.
Yeah, be aware of certain things online.

Is Vanda diffusion shipping from Canada? I have heard of them in France. If not, did you have to do paperwork and clear the plant in customs?
