Default Unusual growth on intergeneric hybrid

No i.d. for this plant

I have had this plant a few years and not seen this before. There are two recently matured pbulbs that have what looks like a much smaller pbulb growing on top, and one of those has pushed out a weak looking spike! (doesn't look like the buds are likely to develop to me).

I don't generally use superthrive, so that's not the cause ...

Is this something that just happens sometimes?

We'll see if that spike actually blooms

I just found it very interesting

My Oncidium twinkle had a p-bulb on top of another like that and started growing roots but there was no spike like yours. I separated it at some point and planted it. But one of my cats kept pulling it out to play with it each night and then it just disappeared. I found it dried up under the couch eventually.

yes, I thought I had remembered someone posting having something similar on Oncidium - guess I wait and see if they sprout roots - they really don't look separate from the big pbulb to me, but I may have not looked closely enough ...

I remember seeing a post of this happening too on an Oncid. I haven't had it happen but maybe they get a bit confused now and then?

I will definitely post pix if this spike blooms - to me the buds just aren't looking like they will do anything, but who knows? The other pbulb on this plant which also has a smaller looking pbulb on top has a spike, but growing from the base of the big (main) pbulb ...
