Some new additions! Male
Default Some new additions!

My favorite local garden center had a pre-inventory sale today... which means half off plants! And these aren't special plants or throw-away plants-- but any plant they have in stock, good or bad, great or small!

So I set my eyes on Tolumnias i knew to be hiding in the nooks and crannies of the greenhouse and found two I didn't have. I was looking for a white and tan kind (that I'm told is quite rare) that i knew they had before Christmas, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I scored Pink Panther and Genting Orange. I have two other gentings, but not orange. The plants are the largest tolies I have ever seen! And the best part is, they're in spike and near-blooming.

I also picked up an Onc Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance.' And man that title is not joking! Most of the plants they had were huge-- and very expensive even at half off but I scored a smaller plant, which I prefer anyway, because it was cheaper, I could fit it on my shelves and its in bloom (the huge ones were done blooming).

So stoked!!! Christmas finally came to my Orchid collection! lol

It's Christmas all over again. That's a nice haul you made.
Do you grow the Tolumnias in the glass like that?

Bill, I do. Easy to water them this way, too, as I just add enough to cover the pot and roots. I empty it out after an hour or so and the glass, I believe, helps keep the humidity up about the plants (also the warmth when they are in the solarium-- for now they live under lights because I can give them more light that way during the shortest days of the year).

I doubled my tolumnia population today! The other two I received in bloom and though they are not spiking, they have grown a new fan each and they're growing well.

As for the vases/glasses, I have found the more plants together the better they do. I was growing my first two tolumnias separately for a long time and only recently decided to consolidate. As an orchid addict, I believe it is our responsibility to always look for new ways to squeeze in new acquisitions! lol Anyway, when I put the two together in the same vase, they seemed to do much better-- perhaps the humidity was up even more? Who knows, it works so I go with it.

Thanks Bud-- I think Oncs have become my new favorite orchid. I'm mostly a phal guy, but I do have neos (two now, thanks to you!). But the tolumnias are fun, small and really elegant, in my opinion. The pseudo bulb oncs are nice, too, because they have such dramatic displays. I'm going back to my garden center tomorrow to see if they still have plants that passed over but now regret doing so!

I'll post pics of the tolies when they bloom!
