Oncidium Sweet Sugar 'Million Dollar' blooming again!
Default Oncidium Sweet Sugar 'Million Dollar' blooming again!

Yellow Dancing lady is one of the first orchids I tried as a kid many years ago.
I got one again in June this year. The first picture shows what it looked like. It had 100 flowers on one very thick and tall spike. Maybe that's why it was named Million Dollar? I've seen a few other varieties of Sweet Sugar like Emperor, Calendar...much smaller...

Well, Mine grew two new growths over the summer and each developed a spike in early October.
Now they look like a mini Sweet Sugar compared to what I had in the summer. lol
One of the spike has about 30 flowers and the other one 10 and aborted branching spikes.

Well, I was actually quite surprised that they even had flowers as I neglected this plant in the middle of summer forgetting watering, which caused some new leaves wrinkled. The growth stunted big time, as a result much smaller pb...
You can see how the three pbs compare in size and flower spike thickness in one of the pictures. The new ones are not even one third the size of the previously flowered pb and its spike. I'm just glad how willing it is to flower!

Last picture shows one flower that's missing a "skirt".
No, I didn't take it off, it opened up like that today. How odd!

By the way, I noticed the flowers are very slightly scented. not that pleasant scent, but it's there. I don't think I noticed it in the previous bloom.
Anyone growing Sweet Sugar, do yours have scent??

Well, it's still looking pretty darn nice! I have a different dancing lady. I bought it bare root in Oct. with a very short spike. 2 buds have opened with about 16 more. I love these and have wanted one for a long time. Does yours also have lighter yellow on the skirts this time or is it just the lighting?

I see a few stores sell Sweet Sugar here in NYC and theirs are small like mine. so I guess mine is still a salable quality.

I love the bright cheery yellow on this plant. I believe the color is the same as previous bloom.
It is one of those colors that is difficult to capture on the picture. The first picture came out rather dark and todays pictures came out too light.

I will see if it will get bigger next year. it would be nice.

I struggle to grow oncidiums but the one exception is Sweet Sugar which has always grown well for me. I think it should be in every orchid collection because it's such a pretty orchid and a reliable bloomer. Your's is beautiful. Good growing.

Thank you, yeah, oncidiums and their hybrids (at least the ones I have) grow like weeds. The only thing I don't like about them is that they easily get fungus spots or virus spots on the leaves making it look ugly and making me worried about other plants I have.
This Sweet Sugar is the only oncidium that has no such spots. nice and clean green leaves, which I like.

Yeah, I'm out of space as well. This is a great orchid, but it is also fairly easy to obtain anytime if I wanted. so I'm not sure if I will keep it once the bloom fades...will see.
