Sweet Sugar or Grower Ramsey? Male
Default Sweet Sugar or Grower Ramsey?

I was on vacation in Disney World and the resort that we were staying at had some orchids growing in the lobby as display. One of these orchids really struck my eye...floriferous display of vibrant yellow flowers with the upper two thirds dotted with red/mahogany spots. I knew it was an oncidium, but there was no tag in the pot for specific identification. I have since done internet research and have concluded that it was either Sweet Sugar or Grower Ramsey. Either of these Onc. hybrids would fit the bill for me.

My questions to the board are as follows:

1. Which is the more compact grower?

2. Are they both fragrant ( I don't believe the one that I saw in Florida was fragrant)?

3. A reliable internet seller from whom I can buy one of these two.

Any other comments/advice regarding these two hybrids would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!

Hey Pete. I have both, and the Sweet Sugar is the more compact grower, and will bloom when a bit smaller. The Gower's Ramsey didn't bloom for me till it was much larger, and the plants are about 50% bigger and taller than my Sweet Sugar. But cultivar could also play a role in size. Neither are fragrant in my hands.
I can't really help with a seller, as I found both of mine at a local nursery or at Pike's.
Hope that helps

Thanks zxyqu for your input. I am leaning toward the Sweet Sugar as a result of its more compact size.

Does anyone have an on-line source for Sweet Sugar cultivars?

There is a reputable grower in your state and they have all the nice specimens or blooming sizes...also in Jersey and CT...you were in FL...you should of asked the hotel manager who their suppliers for those orchids were and ordered from them that exact orchid you liked...in fact you can still call that hotel and ask for the one responsible for ordering the flower decors for the lobby

Hey Pete.

I have a few plants of Oncidium Memoria Kiyoshi Akatsuka 'Volcano Queen' AM/AOS still available. They are blooming size in 2" pots on plants about 6"-9" tall (they all just went out of bloom).
