Hey, if your Oncidiums are blooming for you, then you're in good shape. Post pics of the ones you think are Oncidiums and we can give more feedback. As far as minis, I just got an Oncidium Twinkle "Snow" which is super compact and super fragrant. I also have Onc. Mini Red "CT. Little Cherry" which blooms 3 times a year for me under various light levels, and it is even smaller plant than Twinkle. I also have Gotokoa Masterpiece "Nalo" (Oncidium alliance intergeneric) which is very small plant with yellow blooms twice a year or so. And then of course there is always Haweara Lava Burst, with its vibrant red to orange blooms, also small plant. I have heard that Onc Sharry Baby takes a bit more light to bloom, but don't quote me on that. I do love Oncidiums with their delicate blooms on branching spikes. Have fun and post pics once you get one!

Sharry Baby is very easy. If you can put it out for the summer, it can take a little less light the rest of the year and bloom. With cooler house temps, you want a medium that dries quickly so you can water often but not get root problems. I use lava rock. Grows quickly so it soon provides you with ready gifts for friends. The leaves, unfortunately, never seem to look very pretty for me, though it does bloom well. Good luck,
Leafmite

How often do you water with lava rock? I have an epidendrum in it and I'm never too sure when it needs water. I have put on epi in lava rock in s/h and that has solved the problem. I tried lava rock for my cymbidium, but it didn't seem happy about it.

Vanda Lover - I just moved a Cymbidium to S/H as a trial. They're supposed to do very well in S/H. It was given to me with a severe case of root rot as the potting soil it was in was mush.

Back to original post...Oncidiums love S/H! The best part is, they can't be over-watered.

I transplanted a Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance' to S/H last year and it got too big for the windowsill and now keeps falling over because it's too big and top heavy. I don't have 'Twinkle' yet but it should do just as well (read be another weed) and will stay windowsill size.

Cheers.
Jim

I used to grow almost all my orchids in s/h back when we were in Ontario. When we moved I had to ship them bare root. Growing in lava rock without s/h is where I have a problem with knowing when to water. The epi. that I bought in pieces of brick is doing reasonably well, but I am switched it to s/h in lava rock today, because then I don't have to worry about when to water. My other epi. loves it.
We have no where close by to buy the clay pellets.
