Cool My Onc new growth turned into a spike! ???

Has anyone seen this before? This is an Oncidium NOID that looks like Onc Sweet Sugar, to give you an idea. It was CLEARLY new growth coming from the base of a previously bloomed psb. The leaves hadn't even started opening up when the tip started growing like a spike. So it's basically fat and semi oblong at the base, and then it tapers over about an inch and a half into the spike. Weird, right? Maybe this is normal, but I've never seen it or heard of it. Thoughts?

Orchids behave weird sometimes. My twinkles are spiking too so it's "their time" in our climate. It sounds like your young growth wanted to get in on the action. This happened to me once with a short fresh potinara bulb. The bloom turned out average sized, but after blooming the growth remained stunted and died.

Are you sure that's a spike? I can't really tell. It might just be a new psuedobulb. But, you are right, orchids do some strange things sometimes. Good luck. Let us know what happens.

Definitely a spike, well at least the latest 4" is a spike. At the base it looks just like new growth. It's about 3/4" at the base and oblong, and 1/8" for the upper 4" or so and round.

Wow~ I've never seen that on any of my oncidium hybrids. The typical yellow ones shoot up only one spike per pb, and old bloomed pb never bloomed again. Some grow two or more spike per pb at the same time.
Yours is quite neat! Very interesting. How long have you had it for? If it does the same thing again in the future, can I get a division? lol
