Onc. Sharry Baby-More water? repot? put outside?
Default Onc. Sharry Baby-More water? repot? put outside?

Two rather neglected orchids have been sitting on my windowsill. One is Oncidium Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance', the other is Odontocidium Catatante 'Kilauea Karma' I am thinking I should at least repot.

Also, the pseudobulbs are wrinkled. They have both been living in a South facing windowsill.

I can't remember how long it has been since either had flowers. They were bought in bloom and have never rebloomed.

Should I repot these now, before winter hits, or can I wait until spring?

If I repot, should these be potted up or divided? Is there an ideal size for a given variety of orchid? I see two shoots on the Sharry Baby and 3 on Odontocidium Catatante 'Kilauea Karma'

Or could it even be that my orchids will finally rebloom?

Here are pics of each of them. The one having a bad hair day is the Catatante.

I'm curious as to the responses you get too! I have one that hasn't bloomed for me, and so as a result, I keep buying Onc. Sharry Baby's when they are in bloom, and I have five now, and I'm just dying to have one of my rebloom! Mine aren't nearly as large as yours though! I can't wait to hear what people say!

I am no expert. I have 2 Sharry Baby's. Got both at a years interval. Both bloomed for me after a year.
If it were my plant I would definitely repot there doesn't seem to be much media left. The best would be into a slightly bigger pot. I believe these grow better a bit 'root bound'. Your leaves are not pleated (which is good), although as you point out, your p/bulbs are wrinkly, can't really tell from the photos but the roots look OK? Have any got green/growing tips? I am also a great believer in Rooting hormone and I would give it a soak in something like KLN as well as the new media before the repot.. . In my experience these like to be moist and like light. To me It looks like it has flowering size p/bulbs. Hopefully others will chime in. Good luck & keep us posted!

Both plants were purchased in bloom. I looked and I see a few on the sharry Baby, but it is hard to find the ends of the roots, the roots are so tangled together.

I see more on the Karma.

Are roots without growing tips dead? Or can the plant still use them?

you might not be getting enough light and humidity for blooms. Not enough light is the number 1 reason orchids wont bloom. Humidity comes in close 2nd. The Bulbs look mature and should bloom with enough light. Go Easy on the high nitrogen fertilizer and use higher in the potassium range. You got to almost burn them things to get a bloom. The oncidiums and intergenerics I have seen come from the Hawaiian islands have purple/reddish bulbs and are blooming crazy plants. Of course we all cant provide orchid heaven type conditions like they can on a tropic island, but we can get close enough for a bloom.

I think oncidiums IMO need more light than catts to get a good bloom season. I am still a NOOB so please take my advice lightly.

I been more of a fan of larger flowers rather than many flowers, so I'm not especially endeared to oncidiums.

These never got put outside this year.
I don't fertilize at all. I just randomly soak the pot for 15 minutes every few weeks.
