Hi Helen, I agree with Shakkai

I was reading your story. It seems to me that you had a problem with the medium and that you should have chosen a small pot with large bark and charcoal. In general, this type of plants like to dry fast, the sphagnum does not help. when they are growing you should water more, but they should always dry fast.

Your conclusion was, in my opinion, right. But you decision to use smaller pieces with sphagnum was confusing.

About the plant, if you still have any green pseudobulb (or more), cut it, leave it outside to dry and plant in a new pot with new medium. If it is all yellow... well, buy another!

Helen,

when you repotted this orchid up .... were the roots moist? Also, Did you wet down or soak the media?
What about your lighting?

I've went to large open media to smaller or tighter media, the transition seemed to work out for me.
I have to wonder if it's not something else

The roots looked pretty good and lots of them. They looked on the dryer side/not too dark or mushy, and there were quite a few nice white ones on the very top that turned green when watered so I thought moving to the other medium as mentioned in my earlier post was going to help but it didn't. I let it continue to dry for 3 more days before watering....the leaves were not limp, just yellow and turning brown then just dropped off the psuedobulbs... I have ONE green psuedobulb left but NO leaves....I'm not sure what Tricho meant by 'cut it'.... I thought maybe it wasn't the watering after all, but maybe some kind of virus or who knows what.... at this point I'm very discouraged with it....It was a seedling when I got it in March...sometimes I feel that the adult plants are easier to deal with than the babies....Oh, no I did not soak the media before using it, because I wanted it to dry out in case it was being overwatered in the first place. Lighting: south window with fresh air - filtered.

Thanks to everyone for trying to help me....At this point wondering if I should bag it in sphagnum?

Helen,

I bought an Odcdm Catatante 'Kilauea' and it arrived in semi-poor state. (too wet medium) So what do I do? I decide to try it out in s/h (which I had never tried before)....Sounds like I should have known better, huh?! Well, it's been about 3 weeks, and using MSU fertilizer, KLN rooting hormone, & Protekt (uh..protectant?! ), this plant has taken off.
Granted, the first week or so was scary...(it definately pouted), but since then, it looks amazing...

Just a thought....

Helen,

Keep in mind, you were having probbies from the start. Its' normal as the oncids age to drop of the older bulbs, its' just usually new ones take their place before that.

Perhaps it was just a weak grower?

Don't get discouraged, as a orchid grower this can happen from time to time. Sometimes we figure it out ... sometimes we don't.
I agree with you, I do think adult plants can be easier then the younger ones, their just not as forgiving sometimes.

Gin, Said it best .... Try again
Bag the last one and see what can be done for it.
Above all don't get discouraged, it will only hold you back from learning and enjoyment that will come

Rho, Don't you love when it comes together, you show off you!
