Outdoor oncs in florida heat?
Default Outdoor oncs in florida heat?

I was wondering if they can survive the summer heat of Florida? Currently they receive direct morning sunlight for about 1-2 hours, then indirect for the rest if the day. On an eastward facing screen patio. Temps are in the mid to high nineties now, humidity is between 40% during the day and up to 80% at night. Not sure of the species. I have a thread up in the identification forum but no luck yet. Hopefully I'll have time to do some searching online this weekend and come up with an id. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I live in Central Florida and I've successfully grown and flowered Sharry Baby, Sweet Sugar, and Twinkle. Intergenerics Oncidiums don't do well for me and intense heat might be a contributing factor. I do have a Wilsonara that looks healthy and grows like crazy. It's been divided 3 times. So far only one of the divisions managed to push out a spike and it was a shorty with only 3 blooms. I've learned to steer clear of the intergeneric crosses.

Only heat tolerant oncidiums will grow down here. I've lost several oncidiums that I ordered from California. They couldn't make it throught the hot summer. Some oncidiums like sphacelatum and sweet sugar do very well here. They will both grow into large plants. I have also grown onc. Space Race and odcdm. Nancy Lee Everglades Elegance.I would recommend only buying oncidiums from Florida growers. That way you can be relatively sure they can grow here. Good luck.
