Default Problem with Mtssa. Dennis Kleinbach 'Crowhurst'

I've been waiting for this to bloom for a while now. One of the buds finally opened this morning but it's deformed. The two lower petals (sepals?) didn't come out right
One is very skinny and deformed. The other looks nothing like it should. Instead, it's just like a string!
The second bud is opening and all the parts seem to be there so I'm hoping this is just a glitch...any ideas?

Next time .. feed it spinach and it will grow nice and strong

I love the 'unusually formed' ones .. they are screaming out
'I am an individual!'

Hi Susanne

The common problems are from some kind of stress:

high temperature
low humidity
mechanical damage (ex: aphids)
chemical damage

If it persists year after year it could be a mutation. I have seen some of these in mericlones.

Thanks Tricho

Out of all you listed, the only one it might be would be the high temp. This plant came from a friend who was unable to take care of them correctly due to illness. I'm hoping that it's just due to that...but it's still disappointing

I have noticed that the leaves are pleated. If it was a persistent lack of good culture, due to your friends illness, the plant could also have suffer dehydration. That would seem like high temperatures and low humidity.

I share your feeling, but it is probably just a temporary thing

Hang one to that one, it is beautiful!

Tricho said it all -

I found this at
Whats wrong with this orchid?

An occasional deformed flower can be caused by:

1) high temperature and low humidity when buds were developing;
2) mechanical or chemical injury to bud;
3) nonrecurrent and unexplained anomaly in bud development;
4) virus infection. Isolate plant.

Thanks, D

I'm thinking it's trying to recover from the low level of care it had recently. A combo of that and the high temps might have been too much...

but I will get it right!
