Problem with Mtssa. Dennis Kleinbach 'Crowhurst'

I've been waiting for this to bloom for a while now. One of the buds finally opened this morning but it's deformed. The two lower petals (sepals?) didn't come out right

One is very skinny and deformed. The other looks nothing like it should. Instead, it's just like a string!
The second bud is opening and all the parts seem to be there so I'm hoping this is just a glitch...any ideas?
