I normally wouldn't repot until after it was done blooming. Make sure you don't sit the pot in water to soak. Just run water thru it and then let it get a bit close to dry before watering again. They are fine roots and can get root rot. Do you have good air movement as they like that and it helps dry the media. Hope it works well. And we hope to see a post of pictures when the flowers are open

A local orchid vendor uses a mix of peat, bark, and perlite. I'm thinking that that would probably be a good mix. I've not had the greatest success with normal bark mixes sold at the box stores.
Peat moss is pretty stable because it is already decomposed, making it last much longer than ordinary media. Unless a lot of junk got into your open bale, I wouldn't bother sterilizing it. Just dig past the top layer where weed seeds might have blown in.

I switched to peat mixes because the bark wasn't working for me either: either too dry, or too soggy in the middle. Since moving over into peat, I briefly considered moving my orchids once again to s/h, but as the old saying goes, if it ain't broke.... Right now I've got identical catts in peat and in s/h. I'm monitoring them carefully to see which does better.

One other tip: if you are worried about peat staying too wet for your setup, you can try a peat mix in terracotta pots. This will dry them out much faster--perhaps too fast. I recommend starting slow.

It is in the kitchen by the window which has morning sun.I felt i had to change the media because this miltonia was on rehab due to snail attach. all the young roots were eaten as well.I found worms and some other insects inside the pot after reading your post and the plant looked a bit shaky as the roots werent holding the compost. i will definitely put a pic if everything goes ok. Thanks again.

They are my favorite too. Lots of bloom for a compact plant and the flowers last a long time. I'm getting quite a little collection of them

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.
