From the little I gather in your report it sounds like it might be a dendrobium with keikis(new plants) forming.Can you take a picture?

Most but not all dends go deciduous & form flowers at nodes on stem but when a plant has trouble not having it's needs met it throws out keikis for survival instd of flowers.When the roots get an inch or two long --pot up & you have new plants.
