I figure if you like that type of fragrance you should go to the source: oncidium ornithorhynchum, a vigorous and easy bloomer.

Rick

Thanks for the hint, Rick. So as I understand your post, this is truly the chocolate smell all rave about?

Does anyone know if fragrance is effected by the type of fertilizer used or it's frequency given to an orchid?

I've never noticed any change with fertilizer but I have noticed changes in sents when wet. There have been a few that seem to only fill the room with fragrance when you water them. I thought that was kind of interesting!

Ross,

While it only accounts for 25% of Sharry Baby's ancestry, oncidium ornithorhyncum fairly dominates in terms of fragrance. It has smaller flowers (and many more per inflorescence) on a much smaller plant. It also can be grown under cooler conditions. I grow mine outdoors year-round here in California.

Regards,
Rick

while i will keep my first thought and say i am not impressed. while today is the first day i have been able to be home the entire day since it opened it does have a little stronger scent but still not quite what u was hoping for. please do not get me wrong this thing does smell great but the way it is ranted and raved about i assumed that the fragrance was much more powerful as to smell it when you walk into the room. maybe when the second spike opens it will surprise me

Thanks for that tip. I love the chocolate fragrance. When my Onc. Sharry Baby was in bloom, it smelled strongest in the evening, but by no means did it penetrate the room. Still love that plant though!
