Default A newbie confused with onc. name

Hello
I am new to orchid growing, and I killed my first orchid, sadly, but I dont want to give up.
My den was bought at a supermarket, but the buds and leaves fell off rightaway.
I contacted the store, and they said they would give me a new one in exchange.

It is labeled brs. and something lime. The lag is scratched.
But it lookslike oncidium leaves, so I think it is a brassia?

But my friend who has been growing orchids too told me its doesn't look like brassia orchid because brassia had long slender leaves. She showed me a picture of a brassia nodosa, which has same flowers but different leaves?
I am confused, please help

Brassavola nodosa has long pencil-like leaves and is usually grown mounted. Brassia is a different kind of orchid altogether and has flat oval pseudobulbs at the base of the plant with wider, grass-like leaves. Your plant may be a hybrid of Brassia and other related plants like Oncidium - you probably wouldn't find a straight Brassia at a supermarket. You should look for culture tips on Oncidium intergenerics.

Here's a pic of a Brassia (in the Oncidium family):

And here's one of a Brassavola (Cattleya family - grown and photographed beautifully by Ron Hanko):

A lot of hybrids in the Oncidium family are called "Oncidiums" even though they are a mishmash of genera. Don't let it confuse you too much. Most of them have pretty similar cultural requirements.

I know this is all a bit confusing, but when you cross Oncidium and Brassia you get Brassidium and there are hundreds of such combinations, Wilsonara, Odontocidium, etc. But as has been said, they all require much the same conditions. If you look up the requirements for any of these names you'll find they're similar.
