My Onc. Sharry Baby has been in Tepojal (white pumis stone, I think that is in English) since I got it 3 months ago, and in that time it's put out 3 new growths. Just repotted it in exactly the same media, so hoping for similar, if not better, results.
One thing about using stone as a media is that more frequent watering and fertilization are required, as a) the media doesn't hold moisture anywhere near as long as bark (this has the advantage of good drainage, thus reducing the risk of fungal infections and rot), and b) volcanic rock generally doesn't contain as many nutrients as bark. That said, I've been having great success with my oncidiums in this media.
