I'm not well-versed in the ways of Oncs-- what will happen to this bulb now? Is it doomed to die or can you re-root these things?

I usually just recycle the back bulbs via the compost pile. The back bulb itself will most likely not generate any new roots, Pilot, but quite often if kept in a shady, moist place will put out a new growth. Plants started this way usually take a few years to come into flower.
