Brassia Rex 'Waiomao Spotless'

This guy came from Kawamoto's on the island of Oahu. This is my first brassia... haven't had a chance to read up on their culture yet so any advice is appreciated.

Do they grow well in s/h?

Just recently joined after deliberation.
I'm in the Colorado Chorale (youngest member, woo!), which rehearses on tuesdays, so I can't go to meetings except in summer and early fall. This past june 8th was my first one- and I LOVED it. Haven't felt so welcomed and included in a very long time. I wish they met in July and August.
That being said- I joined anyways, so that I can go to more meetings, since I can get to about five or six a year.

I'm very excited for the Botanic Gardens to get finished (I'm a member there) and go to the DOS show there in October- that will be my first show ever! Maybe we can meet up?

I'm insanely short on time so I don't think I'll join the DOS, but yes, I do plan on going to their shows. And sure we can meet. Chas, another member here on OB, and I tried to meet up once but he went on day two of the show, and I went on day one. Minor detail! LOL

My Brassia is growing like a weed in s/h.

I have a NOID and don't know much about Brassia in general because I simply haven't had a reason to look up its culture due to its current happiness.

I got mine in the reject section at Lowe's at the end of Fall 2009 for 2$ (it appears to have been there only because the flowers had all dried up before it was bought); it had fantastic roots, I repotted in s/h upon bringing it home. It is in a sw window that gets very good light. It has 5 new growths since I brought it home (most are pretty big by now) and about a million new roots; I have not seen the live flowers yet and there's no sign of a stalk yet.

I hope that helps a little bit for now.

Thanks nheidar! That helps a bunch! So was yours labeled or did you ID the plant simply by its look? I'm just curious. Also, I'm told these guys light a lot of light. If thats true and you have your's in SH, how do you go about keeping the pot from getting too hot? I don't want to fry my plants beautiful roots. I'm excited to hear your's is even in sh-- I love growing in hydro as it has worked out extremely well for me. Keep me updated or PM me if you want to exchange more info.

I'm glad to help, Ryan.

Mine was not labeled, so honestly, it could be any of several orchid genera -- but they all are in the same general family. I believe mine is a Brassia based on the dried flowers that were on it when I bought it.

My orchid does get a lot of light, but I haven't had any problems with the pot getting too hot. I haven't had that problem with any of my orchids in s/h, even the ones out in bright afternoon light on my balcony. I'm not sure that frying the roots is a true concern. I suppose they could get sunburn, though I have no first hand knowledge that that's possible. But generally speaking, I think that most orchids probably enjoy a warm environment to grow into, especially during active growth. Perhaps someone with more experience can elucidate this further for you.
