This is a 7 year old thread... just so you know.
I use lava rock at the bottom of my pots for my oncidiums. I have a bag of the stuff laying around, it does the job. My sharry baby seems to want to grow out of the pot no matter what I do to it, so I just let it go and make sure I give those exposed roots a mist when they look dry.
