Orchid or Alien?? Psychopsis Kalihi
Psychopsis has been on my wish list for a while and I finally got one! I had NO idea how HUGE they were! This flower is 5.5'' x 3'' and sits atop a spike that is almost 3 feet tall.
These flowers are just sooooo weird....it looks like something from Star Wars or Star Trek....I LOVE it!!!

Nick, I'm sure yours will look great! I can't take credit for this flower as it was in bud when I got it...I'm not sure what it takes to get them to spike...how old is your plant?

I've had mine for about 3 years or so. I did not have a really good light set up until about 8 months ago though. It had not been getting enough light before, but since moving to my new lighting, it has thrown out two new growths which are progressing very well. I hear they do not need much extra care to bring into flower, and once in flower the spike can keep reblooming for years. I hope it will bloom in a years time or so.

Impressive, Ethan. Unfortunately, I've never had any luck with one.

Thanks, Kim...I've heard they can be pretty tricky to grow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. So far two weeks and so far so good.
Nick, it sure sounds like you're going to have some blooms in a while! It must really appreciate the new light!

Ethan
You picked a plant with a very good form and considering your record you will probably find this one of the easiest orchids to grow and bloom.
For me it was the easiest one to transplant into S/H and and rebloom. I grow in the house.
Link to mine.

Beautiful bloom and great pictures. Psychopsis plants are such fun plants. I love to watch mine unfurl. I have Kalihi 'Yellow'

Thanks, Sun, and Marilyn...
Sun, yours is beautiful! I can see that kalihi gets a lot of it's characteristics from mendenhal. I like how the lip or 'skirt' as I call it on yours is all the way unfolded. I was expecting mine to unfold more, but it hasn't. I think this must be a trait of kalihi.
How is yours doing now? New growths yet or still flowering? I'm anticipating what mine is going to do. This is it's first flower, yet there appear to be two new growths at the bottom as well.
