Wilsonara Hotspot 'exotic Profusion' issues - Orchid Board

Ok so this is my first time with an issue i think its cause of soe kind of genetic disorder but i could be wrong...so here goes... i purchased this orchid from a local orchid greenhouse ooh back a few months and now when i got it had sections in the leaves that ran all the way up them that make teh leaf stand straight up and there not flat they have ridges then i noted that as the "babies" new growth got larger the same thing is occuring BUT there is wrinkling at the base near the "bulb" portion of the orchid and the wrinkles dont smooth out they just grow with it

is it a genetic thing or is it something else....

fertilize regularly and flush regularly.... very green no browning no spots seems very happy.. please help

Hi Janette, I've seen the same thing on my Colmanara. I just increased my watering and the new growths don't show the wrinkling you're talking about. The current wrinkles will stay, but the new growths will be fine. Are the bulbs wrinkled or are they smooth? I'm guessing they also are wrinkled, so just increase your watering. Did you get it at the place in Brewster on Rt 22? Their intergenerics are very nice, but sometimes packed so close they don't get enough water and you'll get those leaves with wrinkles. Doesn't seem to hurt the plant, mine have bloomed every winter for several years.

No the bulbs are fine they look great and no i got it at Marlows orchds in Scottsville NY ..they are Excellent

Insufficient water or insufficient humidity will both cause this problem.

all that stuff is fine i guess ill have to snap a picture so you can see what im talking about better because its not the bulb or the watering or the humidity its the formation of the leaves im talking about nothing else....otherwise i will just continue with my assumption thats its genetic. its happening on 2 of the babies it has and theres 2 babies that are totally not affected from the same parents... both parents have this wrinkle above the bulb issue .. the parents are the only ones with ever so light wrinkles (on the bulb) and those ahve been there since purchase....no other bulbs have it that are younger... i am very tedeous with my orchids on temp. and water and everything

please view images before any more watering or humidity comments

It really does look like leaf pleating due to insufficient watering. I have several like that. Once I increased the amount and frequency of water the new growth was fine. During the summer when it's warm and these guys are actively growing I sometimes have to water 2-3 times a week.

It doesn't take much to cause this. Even forgetting just one watering will do it.

im not sure if thats really what its due to because all of the babies started appearing after purchase on a regular water schedule 2 have it 2 dont ... that cannot be caused by watering... its got to be a something genetic...like double genes or something to cause that

i know that over or underwatering can cause issues but not leaf deformities ..

Hi your plant has changed conditions recently (when you took it to your home from the greenhouse). The humidity changes alone could have caused this. These pleated leaves could also have happened at the place that you bought them if they under watered them even a little, could be you are just now seeing them as they grow out. It is not genetic, and under watering can cause leaf deformities, and inflorescence deformities. No one is suggesting that you have done something wrong to your plant, it just happens with these types sometimes. I have a Miltonidium, that if I even am late on the watering one day this happens it doesn't seem to bother the plant, it still gives me some nice blooms.

thank you the first person to actually explain the reasoning...and all of that but my other wils. doesnt have anyonf those issues tho thats y im so confused i guess but that you for you explaination that i wasnt really getting before... i mean im not worried about its over all health it looks wonderful and is growing like crazy but i just wondered if it was just a gene or not or both
