Cutting a flower spike?

Hello
I see there are already a couple of posts on, " Can I cut a healthy flower spike which is just finishing the last of it's flowering and get another smaller branch, off the same spike?", short of like some Phala's.

here is more info that may help you, in sharing with me an answer:
- it is a Sweet Sugar
-firm bulbs (no pun needed) , basically the plant is in "good shape", health wise
-got this $35 orchid for $5 @ H. Depot, cause it had lost most of the flowers,
(side note: plus they had several more that i would have taken, but they had put them outside (duh),
I live in the lower mainland of BC, Canada, where it now gets to a high during the day of maybe 13 C which is somewhere around, 53 F and at night down to 5-8 C)
moving on...

-i am either going to do A or B or both
A- repot the orchid before bring it anywhere near my other orchids, and/or
B-take the orchid out of the plastic pot to check for bugs, root rot, whatever, you name it
- it will be going under 1 48" F40T10 ( yes, i did say T10) with supposedly 5500K and CRI 85 made by Duro-Test and a F40T12 P&A (plant light, which means nothing really when talking about c.f.)
and hopefully by the end of the week 2 24" F25T5...but it with actually only be under the one of the T5

So, back to the question i started with:

Can I cut a healthy flower spike which is just finishing the last of it's flowering, back to the first nod before the flowering branches start and get another smaller branch, off the same spike?


PS. It's a long shot at best, i know. I would rather just repot the plant ( not that i don't think H. Depot people don't know what there doing..)

If the question you are asking is, "Can I cut an old phalaenopsis spike; a spike that no longer has flowers?" There are 2 responses: 1. Yes, cut it at the very base where it emerges from the plant or 2. Cut it just below the last flowr node. The next question is, "What's the difference?" Possibly no difference. Some say #1 will give you larger sized flowers when the plant spikes again but you have to wait longer for the spike to grow. Other who subscribe to #2 tend to get smaller flowers but sooner because the come from the old spike.....I cut at the base. As for repotting, most would say absolutely just because one doesn't know what the roots are like and how old the growing media is so this affords one the opportunity to check the roots and remove the nasties and provide new growing media. Soaking in KLN or SuperThrive or Hormex prior to repotting MAY help with transplant shock.

I think the orchid the OP is referring to is an oncidium...?...

I have had some oncidium alliance branch out after first flush has faded but it is quite rare.
