Default Chocolate Oncidium?

I thought I had read somewhere or seen somewhere that there is an Oncidium that smells like chocolate. Am I imagining this? Since I'm going to the orchid festival next weekend I wanted to check this out.

Hi Leslie,

The one that most folks refer to as "The Chocolate Orchid" is Onc. Sharry Baby ‘Sweet Fragrance’.

Ross was correct with his information (thanks Ross), but I thought I'd clarify seeing how there are several cultivars of Onc. Sharry Baby out on the market.

Hi Leslie,

I love the Sharry Baby. When it blooms I can't get enough of the fragrance. Just like chocolate without the calories. mmmmmmm!

Leslie, the fragrance thing may be unique to the "smeller". I have several orchids supposedly fragrant that have no (notta) fragrance. I have some that I can smell sweet fragrance, but my wife doesn't. I have a couple that she does smell the fragrance and I don't. So don't swet it. Just enjoy your plants.

Here is a past thread on the scent of sharry baby - http://www.orchidboard.com/community...arry-baby.html
Also look for Oncidium ornithorhynchum - it's the species that gives Sharry Baby it's fragrance

Thanks Dorothy for that link. I made some more notes. Now I have a lot to look forward to this weekend at the festival.

Leslie

I grew 5 different clones of Sharry Baby in the last 30 years and they all had wonderful fragrance which was strongest earlier in the day and in sunlight. Some took days to start wafting. So if you still want to buy another one smell them before the afternoon.
I also found that most people could detect vanilla but some never could detect chocolate.
