i figured out why it wasn't growing. the bottom of the growth was rotted! is there anything i can do to keep this from happening again?

Cut off the rotten parts and repot in either a clay pot or a plastic pot that you have cut holes in. Also use a large grade fir bark for media.

i potted it in a clear plastic pot with slits on the sides and coarse bark.

Perfect! Only give copious water when the plant is in active growth. Once the growth has matured, back off on the water and dont fertilize. The clear pots should help you gauge when to water, but getting a feel for the weight of a dry pot vs. a wet pot will be a good habit to get into and will help with all of your 'chids.

The only way I can grow them is in s/h. They love it. I killed three of them until I tried s/h. My latest actually produced spike!

mine had pretty healthy roots and i used the last of my s/h supplies on one of my paphs.
