My Sharry Baby is in bloom now,but it is one of the dark maroon kind. I love the 'Misaki', and I hope I run across one like it somewhere. Having two in bloom would be nice.

I got my second Sharry Baby ( 'Tricolor' ) at Walmart too! A friend let me know that she had seen a 3 ft Sharry Baby for $14.88! I was there the next morning

The fragrance is astounding when it's in bloom. Once, I baked a chocolate cake early in the day and then later on I went out to the lanai. I was simply amazed that the aroma from the cake was drifting all the way out there!

Duh!!! It was my Sharry Baby

Cool Suzanne, I am really looking forward to mine blooming. I ran across one at very small nursery and i didn't smell anything but they had hundreds of orchids with no names so I am not sure that is was a Sharry Baby, or if it had opened many moons ago, or maybe it wasn't the right time of day. It's a shame because am really anxious to smell one.

I had driven by this nursery, located in a hardware store, many times and saw a teeny tiny sign saying "orchids" but never stopped by. This time I wanted to get some TSP for cleaning my orchid clippers and was pleasantly surprised. So many orchids, many many vandas but after noticing that none of them had names I asked the owner. They apparently bought this bunch from an orchid nursery that had been hit by hurricanes and most of the name labels disappeared. The prices were starting from $18 when not in spike. Most looked healthy but I wasn't sure if I wanted any more NOID's They were all nice size plants none looked smaller than 5". I left without the TSP but with Captain and a couple cool orchid pots made from seagrass/straw or other natural material. Does anyone have an idea as to what is good pricing for Noids??

I'm trying to figure out how to get my Shary Baby to bloom faster so I can get my chocoate craving without the calories and carbs to go along with it.

Just a little update - this guy is still blooming! I can't believe it. The first flowers still look as beautiful as they did when they first opened. A great orchid for any collection!

I guess it depends on how much you like it. I personally will never buy a NOID, and if I'm given one it finds a new home quickly.

This cross was made by Beall's and registered in 1983. They produced many seedlings of Sharry Baby so some of the old timers will have various original clones. The clone 'Sweet Fragrance' was awarded and mericloned, and that is mostly what you see these days. If you look at a bunch of mericlones of 'Sweet Fragrance' you will see a lot of variation in the plants, and some of these have been reproduced as different clones. Sometimes, you can weed through a big batch of mericlones and find some better than the original and some are even tetraploid.

The fragrance is from Oncidium ornithorynchum which is a grandparent.
