I bought a Sharry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance' compot (3 seedlings) on eBay, which I received yesterday. This is my first Oncidium, as I have focused only on Phalaenopsis orchids. I would like to know the basics in caring for this orchid plant. I noticed it grows VERY different than a Phal!
I grow mine in fine bark, since they have fine roots. Oh, and they need lots more light than phalaenopsis, unless you grow your phals in bright light anyways, then maybe just a tad brighter than your phals)
I also let mine dry out. Mine seems to be doing well. It was my first oncidium when I bought it, and has just send out a flower spike. Oh, and they grow fast, so they are a nice plant to have
I got a division of a very large plant at an Orchid Club swap. The previous owner admitted she had been distracted by family things and had not cared for it as she should have. Most older leaves were badly wrinkled and several leaves had been trimmed. Did nothing in bark mix so I put it in s/h. My mistake was there wasn't good growth signs. It is now about 3 months and I have 2 growth that seem in limbo. Will persist but not optimistic.
(full east window exposure; fan on 16 hours a day; on a humidity tray.)
