Strange new growth on intergeneric oncidium Male
Default Strange new growth on intergeneric oncidium

Hi,

I've been growing orchids for 20+ years, but I don't think I have seen a new growth like this before, especially on an oncidium (type) plant. This is Bracidostele Gilded Tower ‘Mystic Maze’. I received this late last year in-spike as part of a collection I ordered. The new growth started right after the flowers dropped off, and it just is very odd to me. I'm not sure what its going to do. I just don't recall seeing a columnar growth like this on an intergeneric oncidium. I have at least a half-dozen of these types, although they are generally not my favorite thing.

I just wanted to see if anyone has seen this before or had any comments/advice? I have been growing this indoors, under LED light, set at 16 hours/day for spring. I wouldn't think light was this issue as it grows with a couple other intergeneric onc. that have "normal" new growths, and a zygo. that has two spikes. But maybe it is the issue? Maybe there is no issue haha!

Looks normal to me! They have a sort of braided column look, and they spread out and get more leafy and bulbous as they grow.

You got a small plant making its first flowers. Most intergenerics with Brassia ancestry become large plants. Your plant will make larger new growths until it reaches full size.
