thanks Orchidaholic and Terri for your comments. I have on order large charcoal per Ross' recommendation and have a 2 inch plastic net pot. Also ordered the homone/feeder solution. When I took the thimble pot out of the surrounding pot the clay pot was very moist. Just let it sit out and it quickly dried as did the brown tips. fortunately two new growth areas were not affected by my stupidity.
keep my fingers crossed that you all helped me save this one..

I wonder how these would do planted traditionally in straight LECA, not s/h? Maybe a chunk of Epiweb?

Glad we could help you Nick to correct the bad info from the grower you purchased it from!
Terri, everyone has their own ways of watering these equitant orchids and seem to do well. I personally water daily but mine are in a greenhouse with lots of air movement so the dry rather quickly. Some people water them every other day. I would be confident that with the amount of light your plant gets that you could water it daily. With the media's you asked about, I think the dry LECA would be similar to using lava rock but a little more unstable being round pellets and could disturb the roots when watered or moved. I think the Epiweb would do good as long as it's not packed in tightly into the pot.
I got myself a Genting Volcano last weekend. the blooms were on their way out but new branches are forming on the spike so I'll see some more flowers within a couple of weeks! What awesome coloration on these flowers! Good luck with them everyone!

I had to come back and express my appreciation to Ross and the rest. I made the original posting about 3 weeks ago. Ifollowed Ross' instructions with the charcoal and potted in a 1 1/2 inch plastic net-pot. During survey this weekend I notice roots all over the place. The top is beginning to resume its growth. I am progressing to more light.
Thanks all!!

Nick, that is soooo SWEET!
Mine is doing well too. . .also due to Ross' excellent advice on the subject of Tolumnias!
I'll post a pic! It's in full bloom today.

I'm having a hard time finding charcoal chunks. I can find coarse charc. that's 1/2 -3/4 inch in size, but it's not chunky. The only chunky stuff I see is at least 1-2". Won't that be too big? I found a 2" plastic net pot I think will work well. Can anybody direct me to a link for the charcoal? Thanks!

You know, I think I ordered my charcoal from Ray. . .cause I got the KLN and Leaf Shine at the same time. I'll go double check his site but I am pretty sure that's where I got mine.

I looked at that Gwen but thought it was just charc chips vs chunks. I dunno! Thanks for looking.

Mine are definitely in the chunk variety. . .I actually have to scrounge around for the smaller pieces.
I THINK I ordered the medium sized chunks.
