Psychopsis repot

I purchased a new Psychopsis Mendenhall back in October. It looked like it needed repotting, but I was hesitant to do so since it was just starting 2 new growths. Everything I read said they like to sulk after their roots are disturbed, so I opted not to.

Now, 1 growth stalled, 2 are fairly large, and another is starting. It still needs repotting and the bulbs will be hanging over the edge of the pot when mature. There is tons of new root growth, which experience tells me this is the best time to repot.

Should I do it now or wait for matured growths?

The new growths are putting out fresh roots, but there is also root growth out the bottom of the pot

I would ease it out, not dislodge old bark unless it falls out spontaneously, drop it into a larger pot and backfill with new medium. That was advice given me by a senior grower in our society who has a Psychopsis over 2 feet in diameter with over a dozen spikes flowering all year.

Those are fantastic looking roots!! I have root envy...

Back when I repotted my Pyschopsis I did the same. Took it out of the pot, shook loose whatever bark was going to easily come off and then plunked in a new pot. I chose to backfill with leca so that it can go a long time before the next repotting. Plant didn't skip a beat and carried on growing.

Got my first psychopsis when I knew nothing about them, other than it looked cool and saw a larger one with a bloom. Took it home, dumped out all the medium, and repotted in semi-hydro with LECA. It didn't skip a beat. This was in February a loooong time ago, and the roots were in active growth. Pot away!

I’ve never ventured into LECA, but the longer I’m in this hobby, I definitely see the benefit of having media that won’t breakdown.

😆 same, didn’t know anything except the foliage and blooms were beautiful and peculiar. Fingers crossed one of these growths makes a flower spike.
