Aliceara?
Default Aliceara?

First post, and I'm really excited to have found your community. I started my collection with a little supermarket Phal seven or eight years ago and I've currently got 16 plants - 5 Phals, 3 Paphs, a Cymbidium, a Brassavola (mounted), 2 Lycastes, a Cattleya, a Coelogyne and a couple of question marks.

I got this orchid as a birthday present last year with no label, no info, no nothing. I'm pretty sure that it's an Aliceara, but I'm wondering... 1. Am I right? 2. Does anyone recognize it as being a particular named cross?

Thanks in advance for your help!

First, Welcome!

It very well could be Aliceara (Brassia × Miltonia × Oncidium) but with changes in classification within the Oncidium group, it could end up with a different name. Without a full name, impossible to determine exactly but it's definitely an Oncidium tribe intergeneric hybrid, and a lovely one. Even more impossible to exactly identify the hybrid, there are several that look similar. The care of all of the "variations on the theme" in that group have similar care requirements, and it looks like it is thriving!

I have a Bratonia Sadie Lou x Miltonidium 'Christmas Tree' that blooms like your bloom.
Im not sure if the names have changed as Ive seen Bratonia Sadie Lou named as Loo and Lou, also as a Miltassia.

There is an ‘old favourite’ in the orchid industry called Miltassia Charles M Fitz which looks exactly like that. See here
Miltassia Charles M. Fitch ‘Izumi’ - Red Fox Orchids

As someone above has pointed out, it is typically the case that many orchid hybrids look very similar, so it isn’t advised to be dogmatic about an orchid once it has lost its ID. I would just label this as ‘Oncid LIKE Charles M Fitz’ and that tells me all I need to know about growing conditions and what any flower will look like.

Incidentally, M. Charles M Fitz is one of those orchids which no collection should be without in terms of ease of care vs willingness to flower and quality of floral display, so the giver made a great choice. It’s one of those orchids I just love.
