Thanks for the info guys. I can't really split the big guy as it doesn't belong to me. I am taking care of it for my brother in law until he gets another house. I will probably "shave off" the healthy edges later however and make a good sized plant of my own.
I am actually considering planting them in the cradle of a large live oak in my yard. Does this sound like a good idea?

Thanks again.

Default Onc. sphacelatum in bloom

I guess the Onc. sphacelatum is doing alright if the 500 or so blooms are any indication.

I just got a ton of sphacelatum seedlings and came looking for info too. OMG, what did I do!? That is a HUGE plant! I'd love to hear what works, and what doesn't.

I was going to suggest wiring it up bare root and hanging it under a tree. I don't know how bro-in-law will feel about the wire. What about a hammock?

I just got a ampliatum in a trade and was told they are high-light, rugged plants, and like to be neglected. I sometimes find it hard to initiate good root growth on a smaller division with minimal roots when mounted. You may want to nurse it a little in a pot - then mount it when you have new roots.

Royal,
The plant you see is actually hanging in a wire cradle. When I rescued it the original basket was off center and falling apart. Oh yes, it was also less than a quarter the size of the plant (I think it was a twelve inch basket). So I just built the little pergola that you see in the picture and slung it up with some heavy galvanized wire.
I spray this monster down with a hose once a week if it hasn't had any rain and dowse it with a gallon of quarter strength fertilizer once a week as well. I alternate between standard Better Gro fertilizer and their bloom booster.

Good Luck,

AaronM

Did you planted them in the cradle of a live oak?
Your entire plant looks happy and finally it bloomed too .
I thaught recently that they need to grow at least 6 leaves to throw a flower cane . Two tiny first leaves another four of them afterwards.
Congrads for your oncidiums.
