Miltoniopsis repot - should I cut the bloom spike?
Default Miltoniopsis repot - should I cut the bloom spike?

Hello,

I received this miltoniopsis in spike. The media was so terrible that I had to repot at the wrong time (ie, no new grothws yet). After reporting about 2-3 weeks ago, my pseudobulbs a shriveled and there are no after growing root tips. Should I cut the bloom spikes which are in bud to help the plant recover?

It seems to be a vigorous plant with 6 pseudobulbs. Thanks.

What do you mean by bad media? What was wrong with it?

The plant was healthy enough to flower, so the roots were happy in the old medium. I don't think it's good to repot unless a plant is making new roots, even if the medium is bad.

Miltoniopsis need large amounts of water. If the damaged roots can't supply enough water to the spikes now, they will die on their own. I would leave them.

Ok. Yes, I have waited to repot in the past but this media was super broken down and acidic, smelled bad and I saw snails! I couldn't jeopardize my other orchids with the snails.

Ok, I'll leave the spike. Is there a point in which I should cut it? Like if leaves yellow or something?

Your orchid is only slightly shriveled. What I have learned from my experience is some orchids put a lot of energy into their spikes and even if they have a healthy root system their bulbs will shrivel. This has happened with my beallara, oncidium, and my cattleyas. My beallara got extremely shriveled when it was in bloom but now that it is out of bloom the bulb is plumping back up. I would not worry too much about you orchid and just let it bloom, if the bulbs are getting too shriveled just cut the spike early. Hope this helps, post pictures once the buds open!
