I was going to just leave this in the plant porn thread but the display has simply gotten too lovely not to give it some shine.

This is a first bloomer for me. got it at Home Depot a while back when i found a tray of labeled oncy-types for $8 a plant i grabbed like five

i described the bloom as a chorus of drunk angels dancing sarcastically to tuba music.....i stand by that

Wow, what a bargain - that's a huge spike. I would be worried about snapping a spike that large.

When you stake, make sure that the stake is long enough so that you can support it up to the point where it starts to curve downward. I had the experience with an Oncidium. that had a 4-ft spike, where I didn't tie it high enough and as the flowers opened the weight caused the spike to snap.

It would be me who would ending up snapping a spike like that, you know when you're looking at or moving an orchid and then you suddenly get that "green plant" smell and you just know that you've broken the spike

That is spectacular. I need that. I'd have to check on the heat tolerance tho. My problem with Oncidium intergenerics is the heat. OrchidRoots (bluenanta) is a great site for that. It tells you the percentage of each species that goes into a hybrid. A plant that is more than about 25% Odontoglossum is going to struggle. I'll be able to grow it and bloom it, but it won't thrive and will never live up to its potential. 50% or more Odontoglossum, and that plant is just going to languish and die a slow death.

I looked it up just now:

And I bet that one would do okay for me. It has a lot of Miltoniopsis, which prefer to be cool, but they can handle more heat than an Odontoglossum, and it's 25% Oncidium sphacelatum, which is a warm grower. So now I just need to find one haha
