Oncostelopsis Sunkissed 'Buttercup' finally a bloom!
Bought as Burrageara Sunkissed 'Buttercup' came into spike mid October, the first flower opened yesterday.
A slug got to a couple of blooms before it was 'dealt with'.
Blooms are not quite as yellow as expected given the name and photos seen prior to purchase but Im happy with it.
Its quite a small plant overall, Ive been told this is normal for this named plant.
Thank you.
I have been told they mature to a pure light orange so Im looking forward to seeing the change take place along with the other few blooms still to open.
What a stupid name "Oncostelopsis" is! All the RHS changes to names seems senseless to me and I shall certainly not keep changing my labels. Also, lumping all the Odontoglossum Alliance into Oncidium is plainly rediculous. I was always taught that the name of a plant is that which it was described originally. DNA analysis is OK for the academics but does nothing but confuse hobby growers.
In my database I mark the plants with the 'new' name but also add
(formally known as Wilsonara)
or whatever the previous name was.
I too have reservations with regard to the plants included as the care can vary greatly.
Other growers Ive spoken with about the name changing say names change back and forward regularly.
Nomenclature is fun but I never let it get in the way of my good time
