Psychopsis Kalihi Alba Care
I have a Psychopsis Kalihi Alba and I have had it now for almost 7 years. First 5 years were great, same flower spike lasted and produced many, many blooms, for 5 years. A 2nd flower spike was sent up and and also did well, but didn't last as long. This winter the last flower spike finally died. I am not familiar with this genus and have researched quite a bit about it but I am not finding the information I need. I realized that in the 7 years I have had the orchid it only produced two new pseudobulbs*. One bulb started to send up a spike last year but aborted. This spring I noticed some new growths (sorry, no pictures, its dark out but I can provide some tomorrow) and since there were no longer any spikes remaining I decided to divide the orchid (I wanted to experiment with different light conditions and media) and repot them. One division is potted in a 50/50 bark and sphagnum moss mix and the other is more like 80/20 moss to bark. The 50/50 is getting a brighter amount of indirect light as opposed to the 80/20. Both are growing new bulbs, one division (80/20) has 3 new growths that are bigger than the other division. However, the 2nd division (50/50) also has 3 new growths but are smaller. Sorry for the long story but here are my questions
*1. How often do psychopsis orchids send out new pseudobulbs? 2 new bulbs in 7 years seems weird but then again it was in spike during that time. After dividing the orchid and the spikes were gone I have 6 new growths total (THATS MORE THAN THE PAST 7 YEARS).
2. The new bulbs are taking FOREVER to grow, are psychopsis normally very slow growers?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I apologize in advance for any typos or errors (the scotch is good tonight). I will try and get photos tomorrow if needed/requested.
