Think of the homeless that refuse to go to shelters/warming stations. I volunteer there but, we still have some who for various reasons "prefer their independence."

Counting blessing indeed. It was 38F here this morning, forecast high is 59F. I'm in the mountains, about 5200 ft. We had snow then ice here early in January, I spent two days staying inside and watching it melt off. My small dogs didn't like it (hard to squat in soft snow, poor things), but it didn't last long. I can't imagine dealing with the temperatures being reported today. Lots of Midwesterners settle out in Arizona, I can see why, but it's tough picking up and moving away from family and friends. Well, usually I suppose. At least the orchids are portable.

Well, since I got up this morning my homepage has shown that it's warmed up. We're up to -4°F now. Stay warm, everyone!

It's super cold and super sunny here. Those of you East of Illinois ain't seen nothing yet.
I'm worried about my peach tree, shrubs and perennials making it through this. There is a layer of about 10 inches of snow so that's protection. But not really for trees and shrubs.
I feel for those with inadequate heat. Our local libraries are heating centers. Call someone for assistance if in need.

I just read a quote from someone who said he doesn't go to any shelter because of bedbugs and thieving. And said he prefers his independence. Same mindset as those who don't go to safety during severe flooding.

Definitely rather "nippy" out today. Still, I have zero interest of moving down south. Been there, done that. I can handle cold better than heat and humidity. No place is perfect, the way I look at it. Fortunately, this too shall pass. Keep warm everyone.

We take great care to keep our shelters bedbug free and safe. Surrounding counties send people to us because we have few restrictions. Still, some like their own rules, and they choose not to come in.

There are also several programs to get them out of homelessness, and they often refuse. The help is there, we are only responsible to offer it.

Yeah, our dogs hate this weather, too. The American Eskimo has a thick coat but the wind makes the cold temperatures even more brutal. I cannot wait until next week when all of the ice will melt.

Dearest didn't go into work today since his officer's pipes froze. Having him, #2 son and the critters under foot, I decided that using the oven to do a bit of baking. It would keep me from going stir crazy plus warm the house at the same time.

Blueberry Buckle is finished and dinner rolls are doing their first rise. I'm thinking supper will most likely be chicken and cheesy rice. Anything to help the boiler catch up heating the house.

The Corgwyn are not thrilled with this weather either. The youngest is lying in front of the oven and my older is snuggled into her dog bed. They'll be thrilled when warmer temperatures come this weekend.

Soon as the sun starts to set I will closing blinds to help keep some of the cold out. The weather man days we'll be above zero tomorrow or at least that's the lie he's sticking to for right now.

Same here, except baking raises the humidity and the windows are already frozen. I spent the day weeding out the orchids I want to re-home and watering. 40s by Sunday. Cats don't care, they always want to be warm. No mail, no garbage pick up. Life has come to a halt.

I had a hunch about what "Corgwyn" meant, especially in the context you used it, but I had to look it up to be sure. I have now learned that that is the plural of Corgi. Are yours Pembroke or Cardigan?

My sister has Bassett Hounds, another short-legged breed, and they sure do not like it when there is more than a couple inches of snow on the ground. There's not much clearance space for their bellies and "nether parts."

Weather report: We got up to a high of -1F, but now it's back down to -9F. That tells me that tonight is going to be even colder than last night, I'm afraid.

I've thought about it, but I think that is something that might take a while for them to get used to, so the day we get a horrible cold or snowy spell is probably not a good time to rush out and buy them and try them out. I might not get them to go out the door. They'll be too busy lifting their feet real high and wondering how they're supposed to walk.
