I never had any luck with lithops, in fact I didn't like them because I couldn't tell when they were dead.
I do get to Tucson occasionally, I've visited B&B nursery on the far east side. They have a great selection of plants and pots. I spent half a day there and wasn't done.
Follow up question: do you use anything in the bottom of the pot to keep the soil from washing out the drain holes? I've had paper coffee filters recommended, but I think they slow down the water drainage too much and interfere with air flow.
Thanks
I use little sections of plastic netting. Back when I tried to get into bonsai I got a pack of 30 for about $5, but I think you could also cut up a plastic canvas (about $2). You can find them in the craft section for kid's embroidery. I use pebbles in the bottom of pots for drainage and stability, and those hold it in well enough, but you could also wire it in through the hole.
Thanks, Mojo. I've taken to trying pieces of fiberglass-type window screen, sold by the foot at the local hardware store. So far that seems to be more to my liking than the paper coffee filters, but I'll have to see how it goes over time. I will look for the plastic canvas on my next trip to the craft store, sounds like it might be a bit pricier but worth a try. Thanks again
