Default Tillandsia ionatha ball showing off

I’ve had this Tilly for several years and it has grown and flowered every spring. It was pretty small when I acquired it and I’ve loved watching it grow.

I have other Tillies and they too have flowered but this one always puts on a fantastic show. It has been in bloom for over a week and every day another plant colors up. I only wish they were fragrant, maybe something like Hawaiian Punch or Fruitloops!

That is a nice show of color. How long have you had this one to get this big.

Thank you! I purchased this in the summer of 2013 as a small ionatha ball, it was not a single plant. It has had many pups and as it begins flowering, they continue to color up and bloom for weeks. The larger plants begin and the small, younger ones follow. It really is a cool Tilly grown this way rather than single plants. Others I have flowered and produced pups but nothing like this one.

Thank you! I grow my Tillandsias in my kitchen window, southern exposure. I rarely soak them, I spray them shake them off and let them do their Tilly thing. They grow and flower and pup. This ball is my favorite as it is such a show off! It is so bright in the window with those amazing colors, especially at night.

I have seen it advised lately to spray/water at night rather than morning? I have always watered my plants in the morning, that was how I was told to water and it has not affected them negatively.

Hope you’ll see flowers on your plants soon!

So pretty. Does it just hang there with nothing as a pot?

Patty, either on OB or another forum, I recently came across a post regarding watering. It linked to a recent article about tillies and the upshot was that one is NOT better off watering at night. It is okay to do so as long as the plant dries off early through the night or if nightly watering is not a nightly routine.

Gorgeous, I never could keep them like that.

ours get a heavy mist twice a day most days and a quick dunk once a week. they are on a board shelf that sucks up the excess misting then releases it. seems to work well for them. too many for the only good window we have.
