Movies you have to see
After recently posting a link to perhaps the best war movie of all time and having someone comment that they hadn't seen it but now wanted to, I got to thinking. While "Apocalypse Now" doesn't qualify, there are loads of really great films that aren't as well known. As they come to me I'll post them, and please feel free to make your own suggestions! First up, one for the ladies! Did you swoon over Don Johnson in his "Miami Vice" days? How would you like to see him 10 years younger? I highly recommend seeing the 1975 film "A Boy and His Dog" based upon a series of stories from Harlan Ellison. It's a film made by actors, including Alvy Moore (Mr Kimble on "Green Acres") LQ Jones, and Jason Robards as well as Don Johnson, and is the grand-daddy of all the post apocalyptic films such as the Mad Max/Road Warrior films. Pay extra close attention at the very end.

Did you see that Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time will now be a movie? This is the ultimate chick flick. A science fiction fantasy classic written by a woman. The casting is quite interesting too.

Wow. I thought "A Boy and His Dog" was really, really bad - proof that Don Johnson acts about as well as a doorstop. And frankly, I'd rather see the doorstop.

Spirited Away by Hayao Miyazaki is one of my favorites. I also loved the Rogers and Hammerstein version of Cinderella with Whitney Housten, Jason Alexander, Whoopi Goldberg...I love the music, the actors are just great and it is a fun watch.
Zootopia is another, surprisingly fun movie to watch.
I have a small collection of favorite movies.

If you like "Spirited Away", you will probably like Kubo and the Two Strings. It's not as deep in lore but more relatable.
And to continue the Japanese theme, The Birth of Sake is a beautifully filmed documentary.
I'm reading an article about "The Lost City of Z" and finding it intriguing. Anyone seen that yet?
Glory and The Last of the Mohicans are a couple of favorites.
At the time, I thought Pan's Labyrinth was beautiful in a disturbing way. I need to rewatch it. It comes to mind because Guillermo del Toro been in the media hawking his new movie.
More recently, Beasts of the Southern Wild
I'll take long haired Daniel Day-Lewis any day over Don Johnson. Wait. Daniel Day-Lewis hands down any hair length!
I like little "gems" or super stupid films. I have a hard time forking out monies for movies, I'd rather spend the money on books.

On my list!

On a similar tone, though in another century is The Express. Glory is a must-see!

Check out Holly Hunter's Strange Weather. Great character study, and a little gem. Also, while I kind of avoid Brat Pitt (his looks threaten me), the movie Fury, while at times simplistic, is fantastic.

I might need to find a copy of Kubo and the two strings. Thank you.

I read Madeleine L'Engle as a teenager along with Asimov, Clark, Anne McCaffrey, J. R. R. Tolkien, Lewis, and quite a few others. I plan to re-read Wrinkle in Time and the other books I have by L'Engle but probably won't see the movie.

For lack of anything entertaining tonight, I watched it.
It wasn't as compelling as I hoped. They missed an opportunity visually, it could have been so much more (National Geographic often does a better job). It should have been full of wonders.
The narrative is okay, the performances are solid and the lead actor, Charlie Hunnam, does a good job being Brad Pitt (who is one of the executive producers).
So, NOT a must see.

Maybe you should skip The Lost City of Z. Charlie Hunnam is Brad Pitt 2.0.
I'll look into those suggestions.

Wow. Brad Pitt is actually a better actor than Hunnam, which says a lot since Pitt can't outact a piece of cardboard. I was a Sons of Anarchy fan, but the last episode was so utterly a piece of crap that despite enjoying the series up to that point I now have to call the whole thing horrendous, disappointing, and a total failure.

To anyone who's a fan of "The Godfather" and The Godfather II", the compilation film "The Godfather Epic" is a must see. It consists of all of the footage from those two movies shown in chronological order, plus lots of footage that never made it into either film. The new footage ties up a few loose ends. At about 8 hours long it's an all day affair, but if you get snowed in, there are worse ways to burn a day.
