Damn, I just wrote up a well written response, and of course lost all of it. (it's a shame for you too because it wasn't quite so flagrant the first time around, but I am out of patientce to retype it)

I am disappointed in the report because I believe it will lead to misunderstanding amongst the general public and dangerous health habits which will last for a long time.

First Problem: People are going to waste money/energy out of fear.

Example:

My coworkers want to know what to do now that the water isn' safe. They have settled, aganist my opinion, on a Distiller because it has no plastic, and (because they're lazy) it requires no maintenance. It makes 1 gallon per 4 hours, costs 200$, and uses 800 watts. Thats horrible. Secondly, they won't listen to reason about keeping some minerals for electrolyte balance. Until they can set up this Distiller, they are buying bottled water, another environmental hazard (energy wasted in transportation, bottling etc...).

Second Problem: People will further the trend towards drinking wholly unacceptably pure water (RO/DI/Distilled).

I worry about people drinking Ultra Pure water. You depend some of those minerals for your health, and using mineral free water deprives you of that. Fluoride is a good example.

Second Example:

I was working at a house and the mother had stock piled distilled water from the store. Besides being unsafe for the general population, it is just plain wrong to feed growing children mineral free water. Hello???

Most of the people will freak out and make incorrect decisions because of this. The AP is negligent in that they did not provide reasonable advice as to the alternatives and frame of reference.

A more paranoid individual (which I am not) might suspect the bottled water industry was behind this whole mess. After it seemed bottled water sales were going down, they couldn't help but pump up fear and misinformation into the system.

Just my $.02, feel free to correct me about the dangers of ultra pure water. I believe that is true, but someone with more organic chemistry background might address that with more gusto.

Our well water is fine most of the time for most things including drinking and cooking, but it is very hard with lots of iron. We need to use a water softener so the large appliances operate properly but I do worry about the additional sodium in our diets or all the other minerals without the softener. I NEVER use it on the orchids and buy distilled for them, but we don't drink it! I once tried making iced tea with bottled water and didn't like it - found it to be tasteless. However, I'd take my well water over the over-chlorinated water that I had when I lived in the city!

Hey Ocelaris, don't worry about it!! I heard yesterday that there are now officially more "payday loan" outlets in the US than McDonalds, Burger King, and Wendy's combined. I doubt whether our water is good or bad or idiotic reactions to that will matter much in this environment.

I think health has taken a back seat to basic survival. I hear Jim Jones Kool Aide is getting popular.

I think that someone should end this thread...it's gotten a little carried away from the discussions, problems, etc. of orchids. This thread could be moved to "Off Topic" for those who want to continue....just my opinion! (Yes, I could just ignore this thread all together and I guess I will)

Gollymissmolly, I certainly didn't mean it as a direct affront to you but the thread in general....all this stuff about polution, hormones, etc.etc....I am just one member and feel that other sections of the forum and/or alliances for general discussions would be more appropriate. My appologies to you...the end!

There is no problem with you all having this conversation...it's just in the incorrect forum.
I'll move it to Off-Topic and then let the fun continue...as long as we keep it civil

Default EPA Press Release

Sorry everybody (Marty) for the big 'cut-and-paste.' I get EPA water news emails. This one came yesterday and I thought some of you might find it interesting.

New for Release: Wednesday, August 06, 2008

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

EPA Continues Work to Understand Potential Impacts of Pharmaceuticals
in
Water

Contact Information: Enesta Jones, (202) 564-4355/ jones.enesta@epa.gov

(Washington, D.C. * August 6, 2008) Today, EPA is seeking comment on
an
Information Collection Request (ICR) that will be used in a detailed
study of unused pharmaceutical disposal methods by hospitals,
long-term
care facilities, hospices and veterinary hospitals. EPA is seeking
more
information on the practices of the health care industry to inform
future potential regulatory actions, and identify best management and
proper disposal practices. This is one of several actions the agency
is
taking to strengthen its understanding of disposal practices and
potential risks from pharmaceuticals in water.

"The agency's work to increase industry stewardship and scientific
understanding of pharmaceuticals in water continues," said Benjamin H.
Grumbles, EPA's assistant administrator for water. "By reaching out to
the National Academy of Sciences and requesting information from the
health care industry, EPA is taking important steps to enhance its
efforts."

The agency is also commissioning the National Academy of Sciences to
provide scientific advice on the potential risk to human health from
low
levels of pharmaceutical residues in drinking water. The National
Academy of Sciences will convene a workshop of scientific experts Dec.
11-12, to advise the agency on methods for screening and prioritizing
pharmaceuticals to determine potential risk.

Other actions the agency is taking include: expanding a recent fish
tissue pilot study to sample nationally to determine whether residues
from pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) may be present
in fish and waterways; developing a methodology to establish water
quality criteria to protect aquatic life; and conducting studies to
examine the potential occurrence of PPCPs in sewage sludge and
wastewater. To facilitate these efforts, the agency has developed
state-of-the-art analytical methods capable of detecting various
pharmaceuticals, steroids and hormones at very low levels.

EPA also is participating in an international effort with the World
Health Organization to study appropriate risk assessment methods for
pharmaceuticals as environmental contaminants. All these actions
reflect
advice the agency sought from a broad range of stakeholders including
environmental and public health groups, drinking water and wastewater
utilities, state water and public health agencies, and the
agricultural
community.

EPA*s four-pronged approach for PPCPs in water is aimed at
strengthening
scientific knowledge; improving public understanding; building
partnerships for stewardship; and taking regulatory action when
appropriate.

EPA will accept public comments on the Health Care Industry ICR for 90
days after it is published in the Federal Register.

environment: PPCPs in Water | US EPA
